Our Story
Na noda Vanua sa koto e matada
After his time abroad, Gerald Naepi (Director) returned to New Zealand with refreshed perspective, witnessing firsthand the deep inequalities faced by marginalised communities – from food insecurity to limited medical access and digital inequity. This became a catalyst for action, inspiring him to create Matada Research – a platform dedicated to exploring innovative, evidence-based solutions to these systemic challenges. Through rigorous research, thoughtful evaluation, and strategic consultancy, Matada aims to inform policy, foster meaningful collaboration, and support transformative change for individuals, families, and communities. At its core, Matada is driven by a vision of building brighter, more equitable futures for the next generation of New Zealanders.

The findings call for sector-wide changes to authentically serve Pacific communities and their taonga.

Pacific Pay Gap Inquiry Literature Review
This literature review examines the Pacific Pay Gap in Aotearoa New Zealand through analysis of existing research. It reveals significant earnings disparities, with Pacific men earning 18.8% less than Pākehā men and Pacific women 25.1% less. The review identifies structural barriers in construction, manufacturing, and healthcare industries, and recommends pay transparency, mandatory reporting, and legislative reforms to address workplace discrimination against Pacific peoples.

Pacific Peoples’ Nicotine-Free Futures
This report examines Pacific peoples’ attitudes toward vaping in Aotearoa New Zealand, based on talanoa with 60 Pacific participants aged 17-62. Findings reveal community concerns about vaping’s health impacts, generational accessibility, and addiction risks. Pacific peoples cite cost savings and perceived health benefits as motivations for switching from smoking to vaping. Recommendations include developing Pacific-specific information programs, creating safety guidelines, exploring stricter regulations, implementing targeted cessation programs, conducting further demographic research, and increasing Pacific participation in policy decisions.
